Seventh Generation Launches USDA-Certified Baby Skin Care Line

Seventh Generation, one of our favorites for green cleaning — not greenwashing — has heeded the call of many a concerned parent with the launch of their new line of plant-based baby care products.

Ingredients are 97 Percent Plant Products

TreeHugger received a few samples of the collection — six items conveniently covering all Baby’s skin needs with ingredients that are 97 percent plant products — and was able to test them out. Moms should know: While the products are scented, it is very subtle or virtually non-existent.

The super-thick and luxurious diaper cream, a faint hint of olive oil to the nose, is a highlight. The Baby Lotion, Baby Shampoo Wash, and Foaming Baby Shampoo Wash all bring a citrusy dash of orange. While the Baby Shampoo Wash is the familiar consistency of shampoo, the Foaming Baby Shampoo Wash is more like a tonique — meaning a very light wash for Baby’s sensitive skin.

The Hard to Find USDA-Certified Baby Sunscreen

But the one perhaps most sure to please parents is the Baby Sunscreen — just in time for summer.

The choice between effective chemical-laden sunscreens or a sunburnt baby is a decision known to trouble many amongst the green stroller set. This baby-safe, broad-spectrum (UVA and UVB) sunscreen solves the dilemma with its water-resistant SPF 30 formula that features non-absorbing mineral sun filters that stay on the skin’s surface, and naturally, contains no chemical sunscreens, parabens, gluten or PABA. While also made with extra virgin olive oil, its subtle smell has more in common with a sprig of rosemary, straight from your herb garden.

USDA-Certified Biobased Products

All products proudly boast the USDA Certified Biobased Product label, the first line of baby care products to hold such a distinction, and are formulated without parabens, phthalates or synthetic fragrances.

The label is part of the BioPreferred program which was created by the Farm Bill 2002 and expanded by the Farm Bill 2008. Biobased products are defined as goods composed in whole or in significant part of renewable biological ingredients — agricultural, forestry, or marine materials — rather than petroleum. Yay for Baby.

The products ($7.99 – $8.99) are available now at seventhgeneration.com and will be in retail stores starting July 2012.
