Iconic children’s program Sesame Street is joining up with Kidsafe and the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) to improve parental awareness on child restraints.
Boisterous blue monster Grover, in his role as Road Safety Ambassador in support of the United Nation’s Decade of Action for Road Safety, will head the program.
Victoria’s Transport Terry Mulder was joined by Sesame Street favourites Cookie Monster and Elmo at Parliament House to launch the program.
The Sesame Street duo is in Australia for the 42nd season of the show.
Mr Mulder said research showed that correctly fitted and used child restraints and booster seats can reduce child deaths and serious injuries in a car crash.
He said an alarming majority of drivers install or use child restraints incorrectly and graduate their children to adult seatbelts too early.
Kidsafe, TAC and Sesame Street will develop a campaign around Grover in a community service announcement to promote key safety messages about the correct installation and operation of child restraints.
The first stage of the campaign is expected to be launched in November.
