A memorial service marking the first anniversary of the deadly Lockyer Valley floods is underway in Gatton.
A choir began the service with a moving song called Bridge of Life, in the presence of dignitaries including Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Queensland Premier Anna Bligh.
After the national anthem was sung, Lockyer Valley Mayor Steve Jones told attendees the day was about honouring the lives lost a year ago, and those who lived through the horror.
“Today we come together to stand with you and support you,” he said.
“It’s also an important day that we acknowledge the help and support we’ve had from so many Australians.”
He told attendees everyone should be proud of the way Australians had rallied around devastated communities.
“They were supported by Australians across the full length of the country,” he said.
