Senegal’s president-elect hails victory

Addressing thousands of supporters in the capital city of Dakar, the newly-elected president added that the poll marks a “new era” for the African country.

Sall’s rival, incumbent President Abdoulaye Wade, had earlier admitted defeat in Sunday’s run-off election.

According to the head of the European Union observer mission to Senegal Thijs Berman, the results were very clear with “about 65 percent for Sall and 35 percent for Wade”.

Even before Wade’s concession, thousands of Sall’s supporters began celebrating on the streets of Dakar as soon as early results emerged.

The first round of the vote was held on February 26, after a month of deadly protests against Wade’s presidential bid for the third time.

The legality of Wade’s bid had been seriously challenged by his opponents.

The incumbent — whose first election in 2000 ended 40 years of rule by the Socialist Party — revised the constitution in 2001 to impose a two-term-long limit on the presidency. He argued that he was exempt from the provisions of the new constitution because he was elected before the new term-limit was introduced.

In the council’s ruling in favor of Wade’s candidacy, the judges stated that his first term under the new constitution should be the one that started after he was first reelected in 2007.

Official results from Sunday’s run-off election are expected within two days.
