LIBERAL Senate leader Eric Abetz says Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young is to blame for the resignation of the Commonwealth Ombudsman.
Allan Asher quit this week after losing the confidence of the Government following the revelation he wrote questions for Senator Hanson-Young to ask him at a parliamentary inquiry.
“This is yet another example of what happens when you do business with the Greens,” Senator Abetz said.
“While the Coalition does not condone the actions of the Commonwealth Ombudsman there is no doubt that the blame should also be laid fairly and squarely at the feet of Labor and the Greens.”
But Senator Hanson-Young said Mr Asher had been forced to resign because he was trying to expose the crisis in the immigration detention system.
It has also emerged that the Government believed Mr Asher had overstepped his role.
“This is a witch-hunt by no other means but to remove this person, because he was uncomfortable for the Government,” Senator Hanson-Young told the ABC.
“He believed that his job as a decent person in his role was to look after the very vulnerable people who had no other voice.”
Senator Hanson-Young rejected suggestions she was at fault.
“I don’t regret it … You get information and you make a choice: is this information that should be in the public record or is it not?” she said.
“I made the decision that it was. I firmly believe it was.
“Mr Asher believed that it was,” she said.
Mr Asher resigned after just 14 months as Ombudsman, saying the contact with Senator Hanson-Young had been an “error of judgment” and had caused the public and politicians “to call into question the impartiality of my office”.
Mr Asher held a secret meeting with Senator Hanson-Young, at his request, and wrote questions for her to ask him at a parliamentary inquiry.
He wanted to draw attention to his concern there had been no increase in his $22 million budget, despite a dramatic increase in his workload because of the rise in asylum seeker arrivals.
Senator Abetz said the Greens had caused the failure of immigration policy contributing to the financial stress for the Ombudsman.
Deputy Ombudsman Alison Larkins will act as Ombudsman until a replacement is found.
