After his son revealed he was gay, Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, recently changed his stance on same-sex marriage. Portman, who learned of his son’s sexuality in February 2011, made his announcement, in support of same-sex marriage, to reporters from The Dispatch, the Dayton Daily News, The Plain Dealer in Cleveland and the Cincinnati Enquirer on Thursday.
This wasn’t how Portman always felt about the issue. Openly opposing same-sex marriage over the years, Portman voted in favor of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in 1996 and, in 1999, voted against child adoption among same-sex couples, according to The Columbus Dispatch. But his new stance on same-sex marriage comes a little more than a week before the U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments against DOMA—a federal law that defines marriage as “the legal union of one man and one woman for federal and inter-state recognition purposes in the U.S.”—which Obama called “unconstitutional.”
Portman’s once outward opposition to same-sex marriage caused students to object the senator as the speaker at the University of Michigan Law School’s 2011 graduation ceremony and, in protest, many walked out.
Now, two years later, Portman is a supporter of same-sex marriage.
While Portman told a reporter at The Columbus Dispatch that he didn’t consider how his decision to change his stance and support same-sex marriage will “affect him politically,” he wants Congress to repeal the definition of marriage as defined by DOMA, but still allow states to make their own decision regarding the declaration.
As way of explanation, Portman wrote an opinion piece for The Columbus Dispatch, published yesterday, in which he stated:
“Knowing that my son is gay prompted me to consider the issue from another perspective: that of a dad who wants all three of his kids to lead happy, meaningful lives with the people they love, a blessing Jane and I have shared for 26 years.”
After conversing with family, friends, and Christian clergy, Portman said he “followed his heart” when making his recent decision to support same-sex marriage. He went on to say that he is “very supportive” of his son, William, and he wants him to have the “same opportunities that his brother and sister have.”
Portman’s renouncement of opposition put a kink in a once unanimous stance against same-sex marriage assumed by Republicans. But as Portman explained in his opinion piece:
“British Prime Minister David Cameron has said he supports allowing gay couples to marry because he is a conservative, not in spite of it. I feel the same way. We conservatives believe in personal liberty and minimal government interference in people’s lives. We also consider the family unit to be the fundamental building block of society. We should encourage people to make long-term commitments to each other and build families, so as to foster strong, stable communities and promote personal responsibility.”
Polls show that an overwhelming majority of Americans support same-sex marriage and as politicians, such as Portman and former President Clinton, continue to change their stance on the issue, the greater the debate.
“I’ve thought a great deal about this issue, and like millions of Americans in recent years, I’ve changed my mind on the question of marriage for same-sex couples. As we strive as a nation to form a more perfect union, I believe all of our sons and daughters ought to have the same opportunity to experience the joy and stability of marriage,” Portman concluded.
