Police forces were deployed in all streets leading to the syndicate building, Abdel Khalek Tharwat Street, where the syndicate is located, was closed, barriers were installed and passersby were prevented from approaching the syndicate headquarters, eyewitnesses told Youm7.

It also denied access to syndicate employees and allowed only journalists to enter the building after checking IDs.

On Monday, the syndicate called for the dismissal of Egypt’s Interior Ministry Magdy Abdel Ghaffar and launched a sit-in at its headquarters over what it described in a statement as an “illegal and unprecedented” arrest.

However, the Interior Ministry announced in a statement that the arrest was carried out according to a warrant issued by the prosecution.

The two arrested journalists, Amr Badr and Mahmoud el-Sakka, were ordered into 15 days of detention on Monday by the prosecution pending investigations into numerous charges including “plotting to overthrow the regime” and “spreading false news.”
