Secret ‘underground palace’ scandal hits Hong Kong leader-in-waiting

Last October, Mr
Tang also admitted to adultery, but his wife of 27 years, Lisa Kuo Yu-chin,
stood by him
. She backed him again over the latest scandal, claiming
to have arranged the building work without his knowledge. “I just
wanted to plan a comfy place for my family,” she said.

“Sells out wife for power,” read the headline in the widely-read
Apple Daily.

The anti-Beijing Chinese language newspaper said Mr Tang’s credibility had
been “buried” in the “underground palace”.

“Tang has no option but to quit the race,” declared the editorial
page of the South China Morning Post.

“One oversight is perhaps not fatal. But attempts to cover up one’s
mistakes are political suicide. [Mr Tang] has given the impression that he
has not been telling the truth as the fiasco continues to unfold. Once
again, he has counted on his wife to defuse the bombshell.”

Until the scandal, Mr Tang was thought to be a firm bet to get the top job
when Hong Kong’s 1,200-member election committee gathers next month to pick
a new chief executive. While his rival, Leung Chun-ying, is ahead in the
opinion polls, Mr Tang is thought to have Beijing’s blessing.

However, analysts said his chances had taken a severe blow. “He has lost
almost all his credibility, he lied every day,” said Ma Ngok, a
political sciences professor at the University of Hong Kong to AFP.

“Beijing is in a difficult situation since there are several days left
before the close of the nomination period and it will be too short for them
to find a replacement for Tang,” he added.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong’s radio call-in shows have seen a flow of angry
condemnations from the public.

Most of the island’s seven million population live in spaces less than a
quarter of the size of Mr Tang’s basement.
