Speaking in the Rose Garden last week, Donald Trump told reporters they would be “disappointed” when he finally revealed whether or not there are tapes of conversations between former FBI director James Comey and himself.
During a press briefing earlier this week, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said Trump would let everyone know whether there are indeed tapes “when he’s ready.”
Spicer added: “The president made clear in the Rose Garden on Friday he’d have an announcement shortly. He’s not waiting for anything, he’ll discuss it when he wants.”
Deputy White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders made a joke out of it, telling reporters that she would “look under the couches” to see if any tapes do exist.
Forgotten in the mocking of the media is the fact that Spicer and Sanders’ boss began this wild goose chase on Twitter when he now infamously tweeted: “James Comey better hope that there are no ‘tapes’ of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!”

But in the end, Trump was right.
According to the Secret Service, after answering a Freedom of Information Act request by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), “it appears from a review of Secret Service’s main indices, that there are no records pertaining to your request.”
In other words, there are no tapes.
The WSJ asked the Secret Service for any information “pertaining to all recording systems installed by the Secret Service or any other agency within the White House on or after November 8, 2017, as well as any recordings or transcripts of any recordings made after the inauguration within the White House.”
But there is still a shred of hope. The WSJ did point out that the Secret Service’s response did not “exclude the possibility that recordings could have been created by another entity.”
However until that is proven true, the mysterious entity is identified, and those “tapes” are subpoenaed by Congress or Robert Mueller – Comey will be disappointed.
