Second man charged over Sydney shooting

A second man has been charged over a drive-by shooting in southwest Sydney where a child was inside a home.

The 28-year-old man was arrested at a house in Fairfield West shortly before noon (AEST) on Monday.

He was taken to Fairfield police station and charged with shooting a home in Canley Heights, at 7am (AEST) on Saturday, where a man, woman and child were inside, but weren’t injured.

The man was refused bail and he is due to appear in Fairfield Local Court on Tuesday.

A 21-year-old man had previously been charged over the incident after police searched another house at Fairfield West.

They allegedly found ammunition, a replica firearm and two shotgun barrels.

The younger man is due to appear in Campbelltown Local Court on Wednesday.

Detectives from Operation Spartan are still investigating whether the shootings are linked but say they are not related to a raft of tit-for-tat shootings in April between rival bikie gangs the Nomads and the Hells Angels.

“There is nothing from these two instances over the weekend to link it to anything else we’ve investigated to date,” Assistant Police Commissioner Frank Mennilli told reporters on Monday.

On Sunday, a townhouse in Canley Heights was fired on about 11pm. A bullet penetrated the sliding balcony door of a room on the first level.

A man, a woman and two children were inside but were not injured.

Police are searching for a champagne-coloured Honda CRV that was seen leaving the area just after people heard gunfire.

NSW Opposition Leader John Robertson has criticised the coalition government for winding back police numbers just two weeks after more than 20 shootings plagued western Sydney.

“A week ago we saw Sydney streets swarming with police,” Mr Robertson told reporters in Sydney.

“A shock-and-horror tactic and no drive-by shootings.

“This weekend a different level of presence and we’ve seen Sydney revert to what’s become the norm.”

Mr Robertson said the police force across the Sydney region was 300 officers below the minimum needed to control crime.
