The boat was en route to the small island of Nusa Lembongan when its engine failed.

The Australian crew of a boat which went missing off the coast of Bali have reported in after more than 24 hours lost at sea.

Four Australians were headed to a small island just off the east coast of Bali for a three-day diving holiday when the boat’s engine failed on Sunday afternoon.

Its owner Ayi Fajri Iskandar, says the crew called to say the gear box was smoking and he lost contact with them around midnight.

When search teams contacted the crew by marine radio several hours later they were still adrift and unable to restart the engine.

Search and rescue teams then used a speed boat and a helicopter to try to find the boat on Monday but their efforts were hampered by bad weather.

Mr Iskandar says the crew has now made contact, after drifting south of Bali into the Indian Ocean.

He says all on board, including the four Australians, are shaken but safe and well.

The engine is functioning again and the boat is on the way back to Bali.
