Search focused on Torres Strait island

Queensland police will fly to a remote Torres Strait island on Wednesday in a bid to find up to five people who were reportedly stranded at sea.

A man contacted police about 9.30pm (AEST) on Monday, saying he and four others were stranded in a five-metre dinghy.

Police have since had sporadic phone contact with him, but the search is being hampered by a language barrier, a police spokesman told AAP on Wednesday.

He said a police plane would fly to Saibai Island, south of Papua New Guinea, where the group is thought to have landed.

“We do have information that the man we’ve been talking to is actually on that island,” he said.

“We’ve been in contact here and there with him, however we are having difficulty in fully communicating with him exactly where he is.”

Police believe the vessel was headed from York Island to Thursday Island when it got into trouble.
