Search fails to find missing diver

A search for a missing diver will resume off a Sydney beach on Sunday morning.

The man failed to return from snorkelling at South Maroubra on Saturday afternoon. He’s been in the water about an hour.

Westpac Rescue Helicopters chief executive Stephen Leahy said the alarm was raised about 7pm (AEDT) after he had initially joined a diving group at Magic Point, noted for its underwater cave.

“He entered the water with a group of snorkellers and divers but I’m told he wasn’t part of that group,” he told AAP.

The search was called off about 9.30pm because of poor visibility and is due to resume on Sunday at 7am.

The man’s car, keys and wallet were found on the beach as water police and local life savers joined in the search.

He has been described a caucasian male wearing board shorts.

The dive site has a maximum depth of 22 metres and is a well known for its grey nurse sharks and a blue groper.
