Police searching for the bodies of a couple murdered in far north Queensland have set up a crime scene in Cairns.

Late Tuesday afternoon, police investigating the murders of Scott Maitland, 35, and Cindy Masonwells, 33, confirmed a crime scene had been set up.

Access has been blocked to Copperlode Dam at Kanimbla in west Cairns.

Police say they cannot confirm if human remains have been found.

The couple from Mt Isa vanished after flying to Cairns earlier this month for a friend’s engagement party and to pick up their car.

They were last seen visiting a Cairns mechanic.

On Monday, Brandon McGowan, 41, was remanded in custody after he was charged with their murders.

Meanwhile, police and SES volunteers have continued their search of a 1,200-square-kilometre area of Cape York for missing prospector Bruce Schuler.

The 48-year-old was last seen near Palmerville Station, west of Cooktown, more than a week ago.
