Sea search for mates resumes at daybreak

A scaled-down helicopter search for two young men missing off the NSW Central Coast resumes at first light.

Trey Adamson, his girlfriend Niranda Blair, both 18, and their friend Ben Winn, 20, disappeared from rocks near Moonee Beach at the weekend. It’s believed large waves washed them into the ocean.

Ms Blair’s body was found on nearby Ghosties Beach on Sunday, and the search for her mates was unsuccessful on Monday.

Two police helicopters, including a rescue chopper, are expected to resume the search shortly after 7am (AEST) on Tuesday, a police spokeswoman said.

The choppers have previously searched up to 10 kilometres offshore.

Lifeguards and police have searched a large area of sea from Blacksmiths Beach to the north and Bird Island to the south.

Police divers have also been involved in the effort.

State Emergency Service volunteers and national park staff have scoured caves and inlets around the coast in the hope the men, who were both strong swimmers, had reached shore and sought shelter.

General duties police officers were part of the search on Monday but are unlikely to rejoin the operation on Tuesday, the NSW Police spokeswoman said.

The director of Surf Life Saving Central Coast, Brett Beswick, said hopes for the pair’s survival were fading fast.

“It would have been a long shot that they could’ve been swept into a cave and managed to survive,” Mr Beswick told AAP.
