Scottish wealth higher than UK: SNP

Scottish wealth per head is over £2,300 higher than the UK as a whole, according to the Scottish National Party (SNP).

The party said new analysis of figures from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) showed Scotland’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per head, including a geographic share of UK oil, is around £23,300 – around £2,300 higher than that of the UK’s.

It also said an independent Scotland would be the 14th richest country in the economic bloc, outstripping major economies such as France, Japan and Italy.

“Scotland is an immensely wealthy country and these figures only underline just how that wealth compares internationally,” said Kenneth Gibson, the SNP Member of Scottish Parliament.

He added that a yes vote in this year’s referendum will give the Scottish public the opportunity to use their wealth instead of wasting it on Trident nuclear weapons.

“Where Westminster has been content to see poverty spiral out of control amid brutal welfare cuts, a Yes vote in September gives us the chance to harness Scotland’s resources to the benefit of people living here,” Gibson said, adding that a yes vote would also give Scots the means to make their country “fairer and more prosperous.”

Meanwhile, a Better Together spokesman said Scotland would need to make around £6 billion of cuts to things like benefits, pensions and NHS in the first few years after independence.

Scotland will have its independence day on March 24, 2016 if Scottish people vote to break away from the UK in a referendum on September 18, 2014 after more than 300 years of political union.
