A new poll shows a surge in support for a Yes vote in the case of Scotland’s independence referendum in the past few months.
According to the survey, commissioned by pollsters TNS BMRB on behalf of property tycoon Tom Hunter and released on Sunday, Backing Scotland’s independence stands at 29 percent, up from 26 percent recorded in November last year.
The poll, which was based on over a 1,000 face-to-face interviews in January, also found that support for Scotland to remain as part of the UK was steady at 42 percent, the same as two months ago.
Furthermore, it was noted that by excluding 29 percent of voters who are still undecided, the rate of independence endorsement stands at 41 percent, up from 36 percent reported in October 2013.
“It is my belief that the referendum is way closer to call than anyone thinks and for that reason I believe many Scots need far more data and evidence in order to make an informed choice,” Hunter said in a statement.
According to a recent ICM poll, commissioned by Scotland on Sunday newspaper, support for independence has risen by 5 percent to 37 percent from 32 percent recorded in September 2013.
The survey of more than 1,000 over-16s between January 21 and 24, published last week, also found that support for a No vote in an independence referendum has dropped by 5 percent over the same period from 49 percent to 44 percent currently.
Back in last November, Scottish Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced that Scotland will have its independence day on 24 March 2016 if Scottish people vote to break away from the UK in a referendum on 18 September 2014.
The independence referendum could result in Scotland’s break-up from the United Kingdom after more than 300 years of political union.
