Scotland to sell water to England

The leader of Scottish National Party (SNP), who has been leading independence campaign since his party won an overall majority in May elections, said that Scotland would become internationally well known as a “land of clean water.”

His remarks comes after seven water companies told millions of people living across southern and eastern England that they will bring in hosepipe bans from April 5, after the country faced two dry winters that have left reservoirs, aquifers and rivers below regular levels.

Moreover, the Environment Agency warned that the drought could also spread as far north as East Yorkshire and as far west as the Hampshire-Wiltshire border if the dry weather persists.

An independence from the United Kingdom would give the Scots the ability to “shape their future,” Salmond said.

Being asked whether an independent Scotland would also be able to sell water to other nations, Salmond said, “Water is going to be a very important resource. We are going to develop our water company so it can do things internationally.”

He considered the continuing drought in England as a “major” issue, and said there could be “long-lasting water shortage in parts of England.”

“There might well be an argument at some time for the transportation of water resources. And because it costs to transport you would sell it on that basis as an ongoing commercial transaction.”

Last weekend, Scottish ministers wrote to the coalition government ministers, offering help if England’s water supplies south of the border run low.

The Scottish Infrastructure Secretary, Alex Neil, said it was “only right” to offer help when Scotland “has a plentiful supply of water.”
