Scot joblessness rises again to 234,000

According to the ONS statistics, published ahead of the meeting between the UK and Scottish government ministers on youth unemployment in Dundee, the Scottish jobless rate is 8.7%, above the UK average of 8.4%.

Moreover, it was revealed that the number of Scottish people in employment has dropped by 11,000 from November 2011 to January 2012 to 2,463,000, 17,000 less than the same time last year.

The unemployment total, including those who are out of work and not eligible for benefits, also contained 103,000 jobless young people in Scotland aged between 16 and 24.

Warning that 12,000 more women have been unemployed in Scotland over the three months period, Scottish Labour leader Johann Lamont accused the SNP government of presiding over a “national unemployment crisis” and putting “all of his focus on separating us from the United Kingdom.”

Liz Cameron, chief executive of Scottish Chambers of Commerce, warned of the gap widening between the Scottish and UK-wide unemployment rate.

“With most projections showing that unemployment in Scotland may rise further during the course of 2012 with economic growth remaining weak, it is clear that the Chancellor’s focus for his budget must be on jobs and growth in the private sector,” she said.

However, the UK government’s Secretary of State for Scotland Michael Moore said although the figures ?reflected the “challenging economic climate”, “We are doing all we can to get Scotland working.”
