More than 100 people were evacuated from an apartment block in Melbourne’s inner north this morning when a large blaze at an adjoining warehouse threatened to spread to surrounding buildings.

Firefighters initially feared for the safety of squatters who are known to use the warehouse on Stanley Street in Collingwood, however a search revealed no one was inside.

Police believe the fire, which caused about $300,000 damage to the building, is suspicious.

Metropolitan Fire Brigade crews were called to the two-storey warehouse just after midnight and contained the large blaze to the top floor.

Fire crews were forced to wear masks due to the presence of asbestos in the building.

It took 30 firefighters about 40 minutes to bring the blaze under control, while crews remained at the scene overnight to ensure the embers did not flare up again.

Police also guarded the scene overnight and fire investigators and detectives will examine the scene this morning to determine the cause of the blaze.

Police are appealing for anyone with information about the fire to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppers.com.au.
