‘SCO can ensure regional peace’

“Some members of this organization (SCO) have great military power that can guarantee security in the region,” the head of the Iranian Presidential Office’s International Relations Division, Mohammad Reza Forqani, told IRNA on Sunday.

The SCO is an intergovernmental security organization that was founded in 2001 in Shanghai by the leaders of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

Iran, India, Mongolia, and Pakistan are observer states in the SCO.

The Iranian official noted that China and India are currently ‘the world’s second and fourth largest economic powers’ and added that the membership of the two countries in the SCO would certainly safeguard security and peace for regional countries.

The economies of China and India together with the energy resources of Iran and Russia have turned the SCO into a big economic, political and security hub both in the region and in the world, he added.

The 12th summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization will be held in the Chinese capital of Beijing on June 6-7 with the presence of senior officials of member and observer countries.

Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, heading a delegation, will pay an official visit to China on Tuesday to attend the SCO summit and hold talks with the presidents of certain member and observer countries.

Ahmadinejad is also scheduled to meet with Chinese President Hu Jintao and Prime Minister Wen Jiabao on Friday.
