Now. a father wants the Illinois school district to reconsider its dress code after his son was asked to remove the U.S. Marines shirt or be suspended.
Daniel McIntyre, 44, of Genoa, said that his 14-year-old son, Michael, was asked to remove the shirt by his eighth-grade teacher Karen Deverell during reading class at Genoa-Kingston Middle School on Monday. Deverell, mentioning the district’s dress code, said that the rifles on the shirt was problematic and had to be removed from view, McIntyre said.
“My son is very proud of the Marines and of all services,” McIntyre said. “So he proudly wore the shirt. The shirt contains two crossed rifles beneath the word Marines, but to me that should be ignored. It’s more about the Marines than the guns,” the father told a television news station.
McIntyre said his son was initially threatened with suspension before fulfilling the request of Deverell, by turning the shirt around. He has worn the shirt to school many times before without incident, McIntyre said.
“He was upset as he could not understand why the school has a problem with a Marines shirt,” he continued. “I could not understand why a teacher would do that,” he added.
