Saudi women demand end of driving ban

Signed by over 600 Saudi women, the petition asks the monarch for a driving permission for women who have obtained driving licenses from neighboring countries in order to aid them in running personal errands.

“We only want to enjoy the right to drive like all women all over the world,” said the petition signed by Manal al-Sherif, who launched an Internet campaign last year urging Saudi women to defy the driving ban.

The petitioners stated that they are not affiliated to any political party or foreign countries.

They also called on King Abdullah to “establish driving schools for women and (begin) issuing licenses,” saying that 5,000 Saudi women have applied for driving licenses in the past year.

Saudi activists say the petition will be handed to the king on the first anniversary of the Women2Drive campaign that was launched on June 17, 2011.

If women get behind the wheel in Saudi Arabia, they may be arrested, sent to court and even flogged. They have mounted several campaigns to try and overturn the ban in recent years.

Saudi Arabia is the only country in the world where women are prohibited from driving.
