Saudi diplomat shot dead in Bangladesh

The 45-year-old diplomat Khalaf al-Ali was found dead in early hours of Tuesday at an intersection just two buildings away from his house, Dhaka police deputy commissioner Lutful Kabir said on Tuesday.

Khalaf was rushed to the hospital after police found him shot in the chest but died three hours later.

“We are investigating the incident and trying to get details including motive of the killing and identity of the killer,” police officer Kamrul Hasan said.

Saudi Arabia is a major donor and a key ally of the South East Asian country although relations between the two governments have been strained due to labor recruitment restrictions imposed by Riyadh over the past years.

Saudi Arabia executed eight Bangladeshis in the Saudi capital last October over robbery and murder charges.
