Al-Shamri came under gun fire on Tuesday and was taken to a hospital in Riyadh, the Al Jazeera Arabic news channel quoted some sources as saying.
The sources consider the country’s Interior Ministry as being responsible for the attack.
The gun fire reportedly came after Al-Shamri posted a message on Twitter, criticizing the dead Saudi crown prince Nayef bin Abdul Aziz.
In his Twitter post he accused Nayef of involvement in his imprisonment and torture and even the displacement of his family just because he had told the truth about human rights abuses in the kingdom.
Meanwhile, thousands of activists are reportedly being held in jails across Saudi Arabia, as the kingdom apparently shows no tolerance toward opposition. Saudi-based Human Rights Society earlier said that the political prisoners were being subjected to both physical and mental torture.
