Satellite pictures show that some high glaciers between northern Pakistan and western China are actually growing ice rather than shrinking.
Using satellite measurements taken with the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment, or GRACE, French glaciologists found that the ice in the Karakoram Range had actually increased in thickness by 0.11 (plus or minus 0.22) meters per year between 1999 and 2008.
Karakoram Range glaciers account for three percent of the world’s total ice-covered area, excluding Greenland and Antarctica.
According to the report published in Nature Geoscience, the gain is very small but they are clearly not shrinking.
“The results in this region really were a surprise,” said John Wahr of the University of Colorado Boulder.
“One possible explanation is that previous estimates were based on measurements taken primarily from some of the lower, more accessible glaciers in Asia and were extrapolated to infer the behavior of higher glaciers,” he added.
“But unlike the lower glaciers, many of the high glaciers would still be too cold to lose mass, even in the presence of atmospheric warming.”
According to Wahr, a few hundred of the roughly 200,000 glaciers have been monitored for a decade or more, excluding the mass from individual glacier and ice caps on the fringes of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets.
“The total amount of ice lost to Earth’s oceans from 2003 to 2010 would cover the entire United States in about 1 and one-half feet of water,” Wahr explained.
A joint mission of NASA and the German Aerospace Center, the Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment (GRACE) has been making detailed measurements of Earth’s gravity field since its launch in March 2002.
