SA’s Ruston keen to work on Murray plan

South Australia’s senator-elect Anne Ruston says working on the Murray-Darling Basin plan will be a priority.

Renmark commercial rose grower, Ms Ruston has been chosen by the Liberal state council to replace Senator Mary Jo Fisher, who is quitting to battle mental illness.

Ms Ruston, the party’s vice president in SA, says she understands it is a huge responsibility.

She is keen to work on rural and regional issues, to be a voice for small business but mostly “to get a resolution on the river”, she told ABC radio in Adelaide on Monday.

Ms Ruston will now have to be endorsed by both houses of state parliament before she takes up the position that has almost five years left to run.

Senator Fisher announced her resignation in June – to become effective on August 10 – after being charged with shoplifting.

The Liberal senator said she was quitting public life to battle a mental illness.

She is listed to face court again next week.
