Sarkozy vows to tighten grip on Muslims

Addressing thousands of flag-waving supporters in the city of Bordeaux on Saturday, Sarkozy vowed that he would reduce the number of immigrants, end any indulgences for Halal meat in schools for Muslims or separate swimming hours for Muslim women in public pools.

Sarkozy stressed that the French culture must prevail in the country and that making special concessions for different religious groups violates France’s long-standing tradition of strict secularism.

“There is no place in the republic for xenophobia, there is no place for racism … There is no place for pools with hours for men and hours for women,” Sarkozy noted.

Many say Sarkozy’s emphasis on immigration is an attempt to woo backers of the far-right National Front candidate Marine Le Pen, who is running third in opinion polls on first-round voting.

The 10th presidential election of France is set to take place on April 22, 2012 for the first round and if no candidate wins the majority, a run-off between the leading two will take place on May 6.

Sarkozy is running second in polls for France’s first round, which features more than 30 candidates.

There are an estimated 5 million Muslims in France, the largest such population in Western Europe

Interior Minister Claude Gueant was also criticized on Friday for echoing many of Sarkozy’s sentiments while at a separate event in the industrial city of Nancy.
