Sarkozy turns fire on neighbors, US

“Think about what’s happening today to Italian pensioners. Think how the jobless feel in Spain, where unemployment is three times what it is in France. Imagine a Portuguese civil servant seeing his wages cut by a quarter,” Nicolas Sarkozy said, addressing his supporters in the southern city of Marseille on Sunday.

The 57-year-old president announced he would seek a second term in office on Wednesday and has described himself as a tough realist, who is defending a ‘strong France,’ while calling his Socialist rival, Francois Hollande, a dreamer.

He also mocked United States officials for their economic mismanagement, saying it had resulted in “thousands of American families living in trailer parks because they have no work and can’t pay the upkeep of a house.”

“Our generation does not have the right to, it does not have the right to leave to our children the job of paying the bills that we would not have had the courage to pay ourselves,” Sarkozy said.

He also asked his followers to “help” him unite the nation against the elite.

Meanwhile, Hollande called Sarkozy’s speech a means of attempting to defend a weak record with ‘violence and aggression.’
