Santorum in damage control mode

In an interview with MSNBC aired on Thursday, Foster Friess, who is a major financial backer who has donated at least $330,000 to the super PAC supporting Santorum’s campaign, made inappropriate remarks about contraception in which he suggested that abstinence was the best form of birth control.

On Friday, Santorum said media outlets were criticizing him for his supporter’s faux pas.

“My record stands for itself,” Santorum said in an interview about the incident on CBS This Morning.

Santorum added that he should not have to defend himself over statements made by a supporter.

Interviewer Charlie Rose replied that he was asking about Santorum’s views, not Friess’ views.

“Hold on Charlie, when you quote a supporter of mine who tells a bad off-color joke and somehow I am responsible for that, that is gotcha,” the candidate responded.

Friess later apologized in a blog post.

In an interview on Fox News on Thursday night, Santorum defended Friess and said he is “a very good man.”

The beleaguered candidate acknowledged that Friess made “a stupid joke” but insisted that it does not “reflect on the campaign or me.”

Santorum also said he morally disagrees with the use of contraception.

But he pledged that contraception would still be permissible if he became president.

“Not everything that I… disagree with morally should the government be involved in,” he stated, adding, “People have the right to in this country and it certainly will be safe to [use contraception] in a Santorum presidency.”
