Sandgroper or Monarch at the Waterfront

IT didn’t take long for opinions to start flowing on the choice of name for the Perth Waterfront development.

Premier Colin Barnett announced today that the Waterfront precinct would be known as Elizabeth Quay, after Queen Elizabeth II.

On Twitter, #elizabethquay quickly rose up the Australian trends list but the topic also spawned plenty of alternative names.

@mikehopkin suggestion of ‘Regina Marina’ quickly gained popularity, which led to ‘Beth’s Bath’ (@katbellavanilla) or ‘Betty Jetty’ (@geofreyparry).

@freocookster tweeted that the first restaurant could be: ‘Burke’s Bar and Grylls…it has a fabulous lobby’.

@mrcorey felt the name choice was a better option than ‘Barnett’s Berth’ or ‘Julia’s Jetty’, while @sporadirc_rager said he would stick with ‘Little Docklands’.

A PerthNow poll showed readers were divided but by 5pm, a narrow majority favoured an important Perth figure being recognised over the Queen:

– Peter of Fremantle: What a disgrace! What about a local name? What about a Nyungar name? Like all Liberal Premiers he’ll be angling for a Knighthood by trying to move WA back in time to a 1950s mentality.

– Sharon Osborne of Butler: No I think it should be something more relevant to Western Australia.

But there was some support for Her Majesty:

– Old George from Kingsley: Like it…better than Melbournes Southbank…

– Better Name: If you are going to call it after Queen, I have no issue, but call it the “Queen Elizabeth II Quay”.
