nsnbc : Democratic Party presidential candidate Bernie “feel the Bern” Sanders endorsed Hillary Clinton as presidential candidate after conceding defeat. Both Sanders and Clinton stressed that the party had gotten together and stands stronger on a united platform.
Sanders conceded defeat, joining Clinton in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Sanders said “Secretary Clinton has won the Democratic nominating process and I congratulate her for that. She’ll be the democratic nominee for the president and I intend to make certain she will be the next president of the United States”. Sanders continued:
“Together, we have begun a political revolution to transform America and that revolution continues. Together, we continue the fight to create a government which represents all of us, and not just the one percent – a government based on the principles of economic, social, racial and environmental justice,” Sanders said, saying how proud he was of the campaign he had run. He then noted that, although he had won almost 1,900 delegates in the primaries and caucuses in 22 states, Clinton “goes into the convention with 389 more pledged delegates than we have and a lot more superdelegates. … Secretary Clinton has won the Democratic nominating process, and I congratulate her for that. She will be the Democratic nominee for president and I intend to do everything I can to make certain she will be the next president of the United States. … I have come here today not to talk about the past but to focus on the future. That future will be shaped more by what happens on November 8 in voting booths across our nation than by any other event in the world,” he continued. “I have come here to make it as clear as possible as to why I am endorsing Hillary Clinton and why she must become our next president. … This campaign is not really about Hillary Clinton, or Donald Trump or Bernie Sanders, or any other candidate who sought the presidency. This campaign is about the needs of the American people and addressing the very serious crises that we face. And there is no doubt in my mind that, as we head into November, Hillary Clinton is far and away the best candidate to do that.”
Speaking after Sanders’ endorsement and promises of support, Hillary Clinton stressed that her campaign would be more powerful now that the party has come together. Clinton thanked Sanders, his wife and his family. Clinton continued:
“Over these last few weeks, Bernie and I have worked together on plans to put college within reach for more people and to ensure that everyone in America has access to quality, affordable health care,” she said. “And now, with your help, we are joining forces to make sure we defeat Donald Trump, win in November and, yes, together build a future we can all believe in. .. His (Sanders’) reputation for passionate advocacy hasn’t always made him the most popular person in Washington, but, you know what? That’s generally a sign you’re doing something right! … Bernie has brought people off the sidelines and into the political process… energized and inspired a generation of young people who care deeply about our country and are building a movement that is bigger than one candidate or one campaign. … Thank you, thank you, Bernie, for your endorsement, but more than that. … … thank you for your lifetime of fighting injustice. I am proud to be fighting alongside you because, my friends, this is a time for all of us to stand together. These have been difficult days for America.”
Clinton stressed that the main staples of the Democratic Party platform was a living wage, job creation, affordable health care for all, tuition free colleges, and an end to police shootings and gun violence. Clinton called for national guidelines on the use of force by officers and provide better training on implicit bias. Those aware of Clinton’s statements over time may recall that she previously derided young African-Americans as “super predators” who need to be brought to heel. It is also noteworthy that Clinton was Secretary of State during the war on Libya in 2011. A war that claimed the lives of thousands of black Libyans’ lives who were derided as Qaddafi’s African mercenaries by Clinton.
Clinton used the recent fatal shooting of police officers in Dallas to announce that “assault rifles have no place in American streets”, effectively promising the 2nd amendment to the Constitution that specifically calls for the right to possess firearms than can be used to defend the country, the State, and if necessary, the people against a government that has turned against its people. Clinton described the Dalls police department as “model law enforcement agency” notwithstanding the fact that witnesses stressed that police could have contained the shooter instead of killing him and throwing the presumption of innocence until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt out of the window.
Clinton agreed with Sanders that the current minimum wage of $7.25 an hour is “a starvation wage,” and promised a minimum wage increase, without mentioning how much. Clinton, oddly, also noted that she “sided” with Sanders on his stance about unfair trade agreements, including the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TTP), without explicitly mentioning that she would not sign it or mentioning what she’d change or make sure it would have to contain before she’s sign it.
Ironically, Clinton praised President Barack Obama for how well he handled the 2008 financial crisis and pulled the US economy out of a recession. Clinton conveniently forgot to mention the billions in bailout money the Obama administration delivered to Wall Street, pulling money of the purse of every U.S. citizen and everybody who had invested in U.S. dollars, globally. Democratic voters will, indeed feel “the Bern” Clinton style, should she win the presidential elections. Many non-US observers abroad would note from the get go that Sanders was a pacing rabbit whose job it was to attract progressive voters to the Democratic Party in an effort to maintain the deeply entrenched, and in the eyes of many foreign observers everything but democratic two-party system.
