Mayor Jerry Sanders signed the proclamation, honoring the growing presence of social media in the city known for its up-and-coming tech startup scene and tight business community. More than 60,000 of its small businesses are listed on Facebook, with another 42,000 on Foursquare.

“San Diego loves social media,” said Alex Roth, spokesperson for Sanders. “The mayor knows it’s a great tool for keeping the public informed.” Roth added that the mayor’s office relied on Twitter to communicate with local residents during a citywide power outage last September.

Organizers Tyler Anderson and Rob Marlborough said the lively community participation was partly due to the burgeoning startup scene, large network of bloggers and social media education in schools. Marlborough cited local businesses’ active presence on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest as an indication of the professionalization of social networks in the city.

“Social media helps promote those companies,” he said. “But what sets us apart is that we get together not just to talk business, but to have fun. It’s more laid back here.”

This is the first time that California’s second largest city will be celebrating Social Media Day, but organizers are pulling out all the stops to ensure it won’t be the last one. The event on June 30 will be held at the San Diego Marriott Marquis‘s Marina Kitchen and will feature swag bags, free hand massages, a photo booth and complimentary food and wine.

“Everyone just came out to put the event together,” said Anderson, who petitioned Sanders to issue the proclamation. They are expecting a 500-person turnout.

Mashable began Social Media Day three years ago as a way to recognize the digital revolution — and the event has continued to grow. Participation more than doubled last year with more than 1,400 Meetups and thousands of attendees. This year promises to be even bigger and better.

We’re excited to add San Diego to the list of places that have officially recognized June 30 as a celebration of social media and its ability to empower people to communicate, connect and engage.
