Samsung Galaxy S4

Samsung handsets have quickly become the flagship for Android phones, with the Galaxy S3 winning awards and being, in general, a critical and commercial success.

On the surface, the S4 feels like more of an incremental step from the S3 rather than a quantum leap, right down to the similar appearance of the phones.

Inside, however, it’s a different story. While in the US, the S4 will feature a 1.9GHz Quad Core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, other markets (which we assume will include Australia) will get a 1.6Ghz Exynos 5 octa-core processor — yes, 8 cores of CPU power. Why the split on processors? So far, it’s unclear, but we’ll be chasing Samsung up about this.

Internal storage has also seen a big boost, with 64GB of storage backed by a microSD slot that is capable of take a further 64Gb of memory.

The 5-inch screen has a slim bezel and packs in 441 pixels per inch for a crisp display. It also sports Full HD and Super AMOLED tech. The camera has seen a big boost, coming in at 13MP. The camera also adds a number of unusual features such as Dual Shot, which takes a photo with the front and rear camera simultaneously, and Sound and Shot, which captures audio when the photo is taken.

Perhaps most impressive of all is the LTE chip — the Galaxy S4 will support six different LTE bands, meaning you’ll actually be able use global roaming via LTE.

Our colleague Jessica Delcourt was on the ground at the launch in New York. She said:

The Galaxy S4 is a high-end, fully featured smartphone that’s meant for almost everyone. Samsung has made sure to include every salient hardware spec, and enough new and interesting software features to hold your attention, if not constant use.

Although the handset’s hardware isn’t exceptionally beautiful and software isn’t particularly inspiring, it has every essential feature, and then some. While you may not use or even like every item on display, it’s long on basics, represents a certain high standard and you’ll be able to get it anywhere.
