As Mobile World Congress in Barcelona draws to a close, the GSM Association has announced the winners of its annual Global Mobile Awards, where the best of the previous year’s mobile-related technology, companies and applications are honored.
We covered the nominations at the end of January, and it was clear at the time two companies in particular could fare well — Samsung and Apple — so how did they do?
Samsung walked away with the coveted Best Smartphone award for the best-selling Galaxy S II, beating competition from the Apple iPhone 4S, the Nokia Lumia 800 and its own Galaxy Nexus. They also bagged the award for Device Manufacturer of the Year, which given the sheer amount of new phones and tablets it came out with during 2011, perhaps isn’t much of a surprise.
The Korean company lost out in the Best Mobile Tablet category though, as did Amazon with its Kindle and Asus and the Eee Pad Transformer. It will come as a shock to absolutely nobody to learn that the Apple iPad 2 was the winner here.
Awards weren’t only given to expensive hardware, as Nokia won Best Feature Phone with the Nokia C3-00, plus there were plenty of categories dedicated to mobile apps too.
Here’s a few of the notable winners: Angry Birds Rio won Best Mobile App for Consumers, while WhatsApp took home Best Overall App. The clever Android keyboard app SwiftKey grabbed Most Innovative Mobile App, and the virtual desktop app Citrix Receiver was awarded Best Mobile App for Enterprise. Finally, Google Maps was deemed Best Consumer Mobile Service.
You can see a complete rundown of all the winners on the GSMA’s official site, and below you can watch a video of Carling Black Label: Be The Coach, which won Best Mobile Advertising Marketing Campaign.
