Saleh is to take part in the inauguration of his deputy, Abdrabbuh Mansur al-Hadi, as his successor.
Hadi was the single candidate in the presidential vote that took place on Tuesday, which was described by pundits as a mockery of democracy. He will lead Yemen for a two-year interim period.
Saleh handed over power to Hadi after receiving immunity from prosecution as part of a power transition deal brokered by the [Persian] Gulf Cooperation Council.
Saleh, a long-time US ally, traveled to the United States in late January for “medical treatment.”
Yemenis have called for the prosecution of the 69-year-old dictator for the killings of hundreds of protesters since the eruption of a popular revolution in the Arab country in January 2011.
