Safety First: Mitsubishi i MiEV Awarded 4 Star NHTSA Safety Rating

Now Available for Leasing for $249/Month

Electric cars and plug-in hybrids have been doing pretty well in crash tests. The Chevrolet Volt got 5 stars, so did the Nissan LEAF, and while the official results aren’t in yet, the Tesla Model S is engineered to get 5 stars too (Tesla has probably been doing similar tests in-house to what the rating agencies will be doing).

Well, the electric jellybean aka the Mitsubishi i MiEV (or just the Mitsubishi ‘i’ sometimes) now joins the party, though not quite with a perfect grade. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has been smashing some jellybeans, as you can see in the videos below, and awarded the EV a 4 star overall rating. This model’s weakness is with side crashes, which is really something that Mitsubishi should address, but it still does pretty well all things considered.

We also learn that: “Consumers can now lease a Mitsubishi i at certified dealers nationwide for lease payments as low as $249 per month** for the base ES model equipped with a convenient high-speed CHAdeMO DC quick-charging port.”

Here’s the small print: “** Payments are for 2012 i-MiEV with Quick Charge package and are based on an agreed upon value equal to its MSRP of $30,675. Monthly payment assumes $3,498 due at signing, including security deposit. Tax, title, license and dealer fees extra. 36 monthly payments total $8,974. Option to purchase at lease end for an amount to be determined at signing. Ally must approve lease. Mileage charge of $0.20 / mile over 36,000 miles. Lessee pays for excess wear.”
