Sack WA energy minister over solar: Labor

West Australia’s opposition has called a parliamentary vote of no-confidence in energy minister Peter Collier after he revealed a seven-fold blow-out in the cost of a solar subsidy scheme.

Labor leader Mark McGowan on Tuesday said Mr Collier should lose his job because he his mismanaged his portfolio.

The minister on Monday admitted he did not know the popular solar program’s 150 megawatt cap had been breached because he was given conflicting information by electricity retailer Synergy and the Office of Energy.

“To move a motion of no confidence in a minister in the government is a very serious matter, one of the most serious matters that can take place in parliament,” Mr McGowan told parliament.

“This minister has been responsible for a whole range of problems and mistakes in his portfolio that have cost the taxpayers of this state very dearly.”

Mr Collier on Monday said the extra cost of the scheme – $150 million over its 10 year life – would be carried by Synergy.

But Mr McGowan said the taxpayer would foot the bill, given Synergy is state-owned.

“This is incompetence on a grand and gross scale,” he told parliament.

“It (the extra cost) is lost to the taxpayers of Western Australia … and was lost by a bungled and mishandled government program.”

Mr McGowan has also repeatedly criticised the WA government for increasing power prices but independent research shows retail prices lag behind the cost of production.

He also told parliament the possible re-merger of Synergy and power station operator Verve was “madness”.

Premier Colin Barnett said a decision had not yet been made on that matter.

Labor’s motion will not pass due to the government’s numbers in parliament.
