SA premier on first overseas trip

South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill will leave for the United States on Saturday on his first overseas trip since replacing Mike Rann in October.

Mr Weatherill will be away for 11 days visiting New York, Los Angeles, Detroit, San Diego and Chattanooga.

His office says he will meet representatives from car-maker General Motors, ratings agencies Standard Poors and Moody’s and a range of global financial experts, including former Federal Reserve chairman Paul Volcker.

The trip will also include touring urban renewal projects, hosting a South Australian defence event, attending the Gday USA gala and discussions with experts in the City of Chattanooga about the advantage of high-speed broadband.

In Detroit he will take part in talks with GM chief executive Dan Akerson along with federal Manufacturing Minister Kim Carr.

“Given the current global economic volatility, now is the time to hear from the experts about the economic forces that will shape South Australia over the next months and years,” Mr Weatherill said in a statement.

The premier’s trip comes after Treasurer Jack Snelling recently handed down the mid-year budget review which was expected to result in SA losing its AAA credit rating as the government maintained its commitment to major infrastructure projects.

However Standard Poors retained the rating while expressing some concern about the state’s ability to achieve forecast budget savings.
