SA organised crime a danger: Rau

Organised crime groups, including bikie gangs, pose a clear and present danger to Australia’s civil society and public safety, South Australian Attorney-General John Rau says.

Mr Rau said that in South Australia organised crime was a “complex, intertwined beast”, involving the very visible bikie gangs and other groups who worked hard to remain concealed.

He said police were currently monitoring about 45 criminal groups, including 15 motorcycle gangs, adding up to about 500 individuals.

“The very existence of an organised crime minority must be recognised for what it is,” Mr Rau told the SA Police Association on Friday.

“It is an attack upon the civil liberties and freedom of the vast majority. They are parasites on an otherwise healthy community.”

Mr Rau said organised crime groups were often emboldened by a sense of invulnerability and that was certainly evident in a number of incidents, including a spate of shootings in Adelaide over recent months.

The illegal drug trade remained the principal focus of these groups but they also engaged in fraud, serious assaults, theft, robberies and public disorder.

The attorney-general said the state government was determined to give police the tools to deal with gangs, including new laws to help break the code of silence that often prevented prosecutions.

A package of anti-crime bills before state parliament would represent a significant update to police powers to tackle organised crime, he said.

But Mr Rau also warned against having too great a focus on bikie gangs.

“Today, we must not fall into the trap of believing our problem is confined to bunch of blokes with beards on Harley-Davidsons,” he said.

“We must open our eyes to the broader problem and the new tools that will be required to attack it.

“In fact, the danger now is that a total focus on bikies may assist other groups to hide from public view.

“While outlaw motorcycle gangs are a serious threat to public safety, they are but the most visible demonstration of a more widespread problem.”
