SA Lotteries has signed a five-year deal to make its products available to local punters online.
The alliance with www.ozlotteries.com will stop some of the money already spent online by South Australian lottery buyers from going interstate.
Until the new arrangement SA was the only state not to sell its lottery games over the internet.
“This new arrangement will make sure that money already being spent by South Australians on lottery games is redirected to South Australia and our local community,” Finance Minister Michael O’Brien said.
“It makes sound economic sense to plug this needless leak in revenue, estimated to be about $3 million per annum.”
The minister said online protections for customers would be stringent to ensure they could buy in a secure and safe environment, including age checks and weekly spending limits.
Players will be able to buy entries for Saturday X Lotto, Monday and Wednesday X Lotto, Oz Lotto, Powerball, The Pools and Super 66.
Keno and Instant Scratchies will not be available online.
Proceeds from the sale of SA Lotteries games go to the state government’s hospitals fund and to recreation and sports funding.
Jumbo Interactive, which runs www.ozlotteries.com, said the company had a proven ability to open up new lottery markets.
“Jumbo will work closely with SA Lotteries to offer customers a first-class online buying experience and to continue improving the service to meet customer expectations,” chief executive Mike Veverka said.
