The Greens want to stop South Australian governments from using ministers as bait for party fundraisers.
Greens MP Mark Parnell has introduced a bill to state parliament to prevent political parties from promoting access to ministers at intimate, high-cost lunches and dinners.
“Ministers are appointed by the governor to work on behalf of all South Australians,” Mr Parnell said in a statement on Thursday.
“They should not be used as bait for a party’s political fundraisers.”
The Greens’ bill will not ban ministers from attending party or charity events, but will ban the promotion of special access to a minister as a selling point.
“For our system to work it doesn’t have to be just squeaky clean, it has to be seen to be squeaky clean,” Mr Parnell said.
“This whole fundraising strategy by Labor and Liberal has a real smell.”
Mr Parnell said former Labor Premier Anna Bligh banned the practice in Queensland and South Australia should do the same.
