S. Korea inks $2.5 bn Uzbek gas deal

Under the deal, the Uz-Kor Gas Chemical company will construct Ustyurt plant in northwest energy-rich Uzbekistan by 2016, AFP reported on Saturday.

The unit is expected to produce 4 billion cubic meters of gas per annum, which is about a third of the country’s current annual export volume.

The plant also hopes to produce about 500,000 tones of plastics per year as well as 100,000 tones of petrol, which is derived as a bi-product in the process.

Uzbekistan’s First Deputy Prime Minister Rustam Azimov said at the signing ceremony of the contract that by implementation of the project the ex-Soviet nation seeks to shift its focus from raw material exports to the production of commodities with added value.

“Several similar projects are being prepared in Uzbekistan,” he said.

The Uz-Kor Gas Chemical company was established by the Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS) giant and the Central Asian state’s Uzbekneftegas oil and gas company in 2008, amid growing Asia interest in the region’s vast reserves.
