Russian lawmakers have accused the chief of Russia’s Central Election Commission of spying for Britain after it emerged that he had links with a member of Britain’s Joint Intelligence Committee.

A group of lawmakers from Russia’s Communist Party have called upon the country’s Federal Security Service to investigate into ties between Vladimir Churov, Russia’s Central Election Commission chief, and Britain’s spy agencies.

Calls from Russia’s communist lawmakers were made after it was revealed that Churov had personally invited deputy head of the British diplomatic mission in Russia, Denis Keefe, to attend the commission’s press center in Moscow at the time of Russia’s parliamentary elections in December, which the West accused of being rigged.

Keefe is known to be an expert on velvet revolutions as he also served on Britain’s Joint Intelligence committee.

The Russian President Dmitry Medvedev already lashed out at the West’s meddling in his country’s State Duma elections saying a European Parliament call for new elections “means nothing.”

The new allegations of British spy agencies’ ties with Russia’s election chief deliver the British government a severe blow as Britain already embarked on warming relations with Russia.

After former British Prime Minister Tony Blair’s chief of staff, Jonathan Powell, admitted that Britain used a fake rock to spy on Russia, Russian authorities turned a skeptical eye toward the admission and maintained the measure showed Britain was bent on improving its relations with the Russian government.

However, the new allegations are another source of embarrassment for British authorities as an investigation into the issue might shed light on UK’s role in the protests which followed Russia’s Duma elections.
