Russians hold protests against Putin

On Sunday, local officials estimated that about five thousand people, including renowned poets and writers such as novelist Boris Akunin, have taken part in the “control walk.”

Although the protest walk had not received city approval, so far there have been no reports of clashes between police forces and the protesters.

The Sunday’s gathering was one of the several anti-Putin rallies held in the capital this week.

About 400 protesters were arrested last Sunday in a rally the opposition called a million-man march. Activists have reportedly scheduled another million-man march for June 12.

In March elections, Putin won 64 percent of the vote. He was sworn in as president on May 7.

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has also been approved as prime minister.

The opposition has repeatedly raised fraud allegations and called for protests, but Putin has assured the Russians that he has “won in an honest and fair combat.”

Protesters are angry that Putin has extended his already 12-year hold on power for six more years, saying it will stifle political and economic reforms in the country.

Putin has accused the United States of encouraging and financing the protesters.
