MC-21_Russia_AviationThe Russian United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), located in Irkutsk, plans to deliver the MC-21 passenger jet including new Russian PD-14 engines from 2019. The development is not only significant for the Russian aviation industry. It also contributed to making the Russian economy, aviation and tourism industry and possibly Russian aerospace defense more robust in the light of growing tensions and sanctions imposed by the EU and the USA.

The PD-14 engine is developed by Russia’s United Engine Corporation. It is the first Russian-developed civil aviation engine for decades. UAC announced that the first jets will be equipped with U.S.-American Pratt and Whitney PW1400G engines while later models can be delivered optional, equipped with either the American PW1400G or the Russian PD-14 engines.

The PD-14 engine is according to an aviation engineer nsnbc consulted a high-bypass engine that is likely to sport advanced new gear and fan systems. It will be an engine that is likely to combine low emissions, fuel efficiency, low noise levels and high performance, she said.

MC-21_PD-14_Russia_AviationThe new Russian airliner will receive State subsidies for market promotion, not unlike the subsidies that are received by western aircraft manufacturers like Boeing or Airbus, whose developers to a large degree rely on cooperation with tax-funded institutions like NASA. The Russian aviation and airline industry has since the collapse of the Soviet Union increasingly be dominated by Airbus and Boeing while the development of Russian civil aviation jets virtually ground to a standstill.

The Head of the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) Yuri Slusar noted that “We should use all the experience, both positive and negative, which we received with SSJ-100 – that is what we say to the shareholders. This also applies to the state support measures. The proven measures that worked will be used on this project.”. Slusar also noted that Stare guarantees include remaining value guarantees, subsidies for attracting loans, export loans, as well as support with the completion of the MC-21’s development and certification.

By June 2016 the investment into the MC-21 totaled about 100 bln rubles. Some 80% of them were covered by State funds. The MC-21 is a series of twin-engine short and mid-range airliners that is being developed to replace the Soviet Tu-134, the TU-154 as well as its Western analogues. The maiden flight of the first MC-21 is scheduled for 2016 and serial production of the new airliner is scheduled to begin in 2019 – 2020. The airliner, that according to unofficial sources will be competitive with regard to pricing, will also sport the latest developments in avionics.
