During a meeting with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Friday, Lavrov said if the US adopts a bill to penalize Russian officials for human rights allegations, their relations would suffer “serious damage.”
Russia’s state news agency Itar-Tass reported Lavrov said “the possible endorsement in the United States of the ‘Magnitsky law’ will bring serious damage” to relations of the two states.
Last week, the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee passed the “Sergei Magnitsky Rule of Law Accountability Act,” named after a Russian lawyer.
The lawyer had been arrested on tax evasion charges and died in the police’s custody in 2009. The US accuses Russia of human rights abuses over his death.
The American bill would deny visas and freeze the assets of Russians suspected of involvement in Magnitsky’s death.
Earlier this month, Russian President Vladimir Putin said it will impose visa bans against some US officials if the US Congress approves the bill.
