‘Russia to safeguard athletes in Sochi’

Russia will do its utmost to ensure the safety of athletes and guests of the Sochi Olympic Winter Games, Russian President Vladimir Putin has said.

“As organizers of this competition, we must guarantee safety of athletes and guests of the Olympics – this wonderful sports celebration – and we’ll do our best to achieve our goal,” Putin said in the city of Sochi on Friday.

“After the USSR [The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics] split, after quite tragic and, let’s speak openly here, bloody events in the Caucasus, the Russian people were in a depressing and pessimistic mood. And now we need cheering up. We need to realize and feel that we’re capable of implementing large-scale projects,” the president said.

Putin’s visit to Sochi came a day after he had a meeting with foreign ambassadors in Moscow in which he told them that the event would be held “without any discrimination” against athletes and visitors.

“The games will be held in complete compliance with the Olympic Charter, without any discrimination on the basis of any characteristic,” he said on Thursday.

According to the Olympic Charter, “Any form of discrimination with regard to a country or a person on grounds of race, religion, politics, gender or otherwise is incompatible with belonging to the Olympic Movement.”

The Sochi Olympic Winter Games will be held from February 7 to 23, and for the first time in the Olympic history, members of the delegations will be able to travel to the host city without a visa.
