nsnbc : Russian President Vladimir Putin penned a decree that slams Turkey with a set of sanctions in response to the downing of a Russian Su-24 front-line bomber in Syria. Russia and Turkey disagree whether the Russian jet had briefly entered Turkish airspace, but Moscow, as well as a number of Turkey’s NATO allies condemned the shoot-down under any circumstance.
On Saturday President Vladimir Putin penned a decree that put bans and restrictions against the import of certain Turkish goods and other measures.
The decree stipulates that it aims at protecting national security and national interests of the Russian Federation, the protection of Russian citizens from criminal and other illegal activities and includes a ban on organizations under Turkey’s jurisdiction to conduct certain types of activity in the Russian Federation.
The sanctions also include a ban on the employment of Turkish nationals, staring from January 1, 2016 as well as a ban on selling tours and related activities linked to visits to Turkey.
Putin has earlier issued a travel advisory that warned Russian citizens not to travel to or in Turkey due to the risk of terrorism, comparable to that in Egypt.
Earlier this week the government of the Republic of Crimea also issued a series of sanctions that included 30 Turkish construction projects. It is uncertain whether Moscow also will impose sanctions related to the nuclear reactor it plans to build in Turkey – a proposition most analysts consider to be very unlikely.
One of the two Su-24 pilots was rescued while one was shot and killed by Turkish-backed Turkmen “rebels” in Syria. Ankara reportedly plans to transfer the body of the slain Russian pilot to Russian diplomats on Sunday.
