Yuri Ushakov noted that the issue will also be discussed during a Thursday meeting of Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the Russian leader on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Beijing. He added that the Kremlin considers the meeting as especially significant.
The official also underlined the role of diplomacy to resolve issues regarding Iran’s nuclear energy, adding that despite the current Western dispute with respect to Iran’s nuclear program, “it is important for President Putin to know how Iranian officials view the situation.”
The Russian presidential advisor also asserted that the Iranian and Russian presidents agreed on Thursday meeting in a recent telephone conversation, noting that both leaders wanted to hold this dialogue at the earliest opportunity.
President Ahmadinejad arrived in China Tuesday evening, leading a high-ranking delegation, to participate in the 12th summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
The SCO is an intergovernmental security organization that was founded in 2001 in Shanghai by the leaders of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.
Iran, India, Mongolia, and Pakistan are observer states of the organization.
